But at length, there was a click, and with a swish, the panel of painted books swung outward from the wall. Not far from the entrance, on the left, was a sort of screen, or partition-wall, reaching from the floor to the ceiling, formed of thick oaken planks riveted together by iron bolts, and studded with broad-headed nails. The blinds were all drawn, the sunlight kept out, one could not tell what colors these gray swathings hid. Awful shapes seemed to flit by, borne on the wings of the tempest, animating and directing its fury. The response of her body was enough that she lazily opened her eyes. It was painted in the early seventeenth century by a minor artist named DuPre.
