During the wet monsoon the west beach was always littered. For the most part these were detached people: men practising the plastic arts, young writers, young men in employment, a very large proportion of girls and women—self-supporting women or girls of the student class. ToC Monday, the 31st of August 1724,—a day long afterwards remembered by the officers of Newgate,—was distinguished by an unusual influx of visitors to the Lodge. The door was fastened by a catch and a latch with an inside key, to which at night a chain and two bolts were added.
